đ˘ Mousehole chief Ash rues âflatâ display in Yate loss
By Pablo Woolls-Blanco at Trungle Parc
Mousehole manager Jake Ash rued his sideâs flatâ display as the Seagulls suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Yate Town.
In a game masked by wet and windy weather conditions, Mouseholeâs five-game unbeaten streak came to an end as they suffered their first home defeat since mid-November in the Southern League Division One South.
After a bright opening few minutes from Ashâs team, Yate were awarded a penalty with just five minutes played, as Calum English-Brown appeared to be taken down in the box by Max Hill, with Nick McCootie calmly placing the resulting spot-kick into the bottom right corner. The striking duo would go on to cause the Mousehole defence several problems in the first half.
The second half, similar to the first, was without too many clear cut chances, although the best for the home side fell to in-form midfielder Tallan Mitchell, who came close to converting once in the first half and twice in the second. After eight minutes of stoppage time, there was no way through for the Seagulls.
âIt was a game of the conditions, wasnât it?â Ash said. âIt was always going to be an ugly game. Listen, they did a good job first half with the wind behind them of making it difficult and we didnât really get out as weâd expect.
âSecond half, I thought weâd go and turn the screw, but it just didnât really happen. We looked really flat today, which hasnât been the case in the last five, during that run that weâve been on.
âI wonât take anything away from Yate, because that team theyâve put out there today is a play-off team without a shadow of a doubt. Theyâve recruited incredibly.
âThat said, I felt like it was still a game we could have got something from, but we just didnât do enough in the end. We just need to inject a little bit of energy and weâve got a plan of how to do that because it just looked a little bit flat today.â
đ´ Western: Table-topping Helston among quartet of winners
By Matt Friday
If they werenât already in pole position in the Western League Premier Division title race after last weekend, Helston Athletic certainly are now following another significant Saturdayâs action.
The Bluesâ dramatic 2-1 win at former leaders Clevedon Town last Saturday handed the advantage to Matt Cusackâs side, who moved a point behind the Seasiders with a game in hand.
Fast forward seven days and Helston are now leading from the front after Steve Colwellâs free-kick and Dave Barkerâs wind-assisted drive from inside his own half clinched a 2-0 triumph over Shepton Mallet.
That in itself wasnât enough to send the Blues to the summit, but they were aided by rivals Clevedon, whose faltering form continued as they slumped to a 1-0 reverse at Saltash United.
Joe Preece scored the only goal of the game at Waterways Stadium as the Ashes registered victory for the first time since Boxing Day â lifting Mackenzie Brownâs side up to 14th in the process â and condemned Clevedon to another defeat at the hands of a Cornish club for a third successive week.
Elsewhere, St Blazeyâs flying start to 2024 continued with a 2-1 victory at home to a Barnstaple Town side that had only lost once in the league before the weekend.
